Horses for everybody

We have horses suitable for everybody, from beginners to experienced riders.

The Safarihestar horse rental is a family-run business. The horse rental was founded by the honorary couple Arngrímur Geirsson and Gígja Ester Sigurbjörnsdóttir. They were school teachers at the local compulsory school with a huge interest and love for horses and horseback riding.

The rental started out as something to do during the summer break, which in Iceland used to be from early May through the middle of September back in the good old days. Nowadays school is out from early June through late August.

All of their children (5) have worked at one point or another at the horse rental and many of their grandchildren also. So you can say this has truly been a family-run business.

We have been lucky enough in the past few years to have additional staff that feels almost like family, some have even lived at the farm during the summer. Today the 5 siblings own the horse rental, each contributing in their own way.

Most of the horses in the rental are owned by the family and are born, raised, and trained on the farm. We have suitable horses for children, beginners, and experienced riders.

Reviews

What our customers say!

Fabulous ride!

"We did the two-hour tour and had a wonderful time. We rode through the lava fields and along the Lake. The horses were gentle and well-behaved. The Icelandic horse has a special gait called a "tolt". Great instruction. It's a simple place. They provide helmets and a bug net (much needed!) and they have a bathroom. The saddles were English. I would highly recommend this even for beginners!"

Fantastic experience of Mývatn

"This was our last stop when exploring the Myvatn region. An amazing way to wrap up the stay and experience nature and fabulous views from a more personal angle. Very friendly and knowledgeable (about horses and interesting facts about nature and area) staff, a warm and family-centric atmosphere. Some of us had never done horseback riding before and this was no problem at all. Would recommend this highly!"

Highlight of Mývatn!

"This was the highlight of Myvatn for us! Gilli is a skilled and knowledgeable guide. We saw the gorgeous countryside and learned a lot along the way. The horses are clearly well taken care of and they are excellently trained. We are novice riders and had an easy time of it. The tour itself takes you through some very unique spots! We had a great time and are so glad we did it! Highly recommend!"

Lots of fun

"The tour was a lot of fun. The staff was very friendly and inviting. I took the 1-hour tour and my group was guided around the rocky lava field in the area. The horses were fantastic and full of character. Mine kept eating while walking. Hint: unless you’re a riding expert, do not bring a camera with you."
